How Regulated Investment Flows Are Reshaping the Crypto Market: Andrew Forson on the DVIO Index

Crypto markets generate no shortage of data, from prices and exchange volumes to on-chain activity. What they have lacked is a clear read on where regulated investor capital is actually going. The DEFT Valour Investment Opportunity (DVIO) Index, built by DeFi Technologies, aims to fill that gap. It tracks the top 50 crypto assets by assets under management within the product range of Valour, DeFi Technologies’ wholly owned ETP issuer, and adjusts weights weekly to reflect real capital allocation and net flows.

In this deep dive for Fintech News UAE, Andrew Forson, President of DeFi Technologies, explains why regulated ETP flows offer a more reliable signal than exchange data, how the index is constructed, and what it has revealed about the growing weight of revenue-generating and AI-linked altcoins. He also addresses the limits of an index drawn from a single issuer’s ecosystem, the role AI can play in interpreting flows, and why he believes the line between traditional and digital assets is already disappearing.

Crypto is saturated with price, exchange and on-chain data. What specific information gap was DVIO designed to solve, and why are regulated ETP flows a better signal for that purpose?

The specific advantage that the DEFT Valour Investment Opportunity (DVIO) Index, is that the it incorporates actual capital flow movements into digital assets that are wrapped into regulated instruments. The entire universe of products covers the crypto majors, like BTC, ETH, and SOL, as well as exposure to the up-and-coming ALT Coins that have value propositions and tokenomics that are based on underlying revenue generating business models or have linkages to the rapidly expanding AI space.

We view regulated ETP flows as a better signal, because while many digital asset exchanges can be subject to price manipulation, traditional exchange have been able to offer rules and structure that maximize trading fairness.

While not perfect, traditional securities exchanges tend to do a better job of allowing price discovery, reasonable spreads and fair access.

In structuring the DVIO Index universe around Valour ETPs, we are able to inject a degree of homogeneity and predictability towards how and where the underlying index components trade.

Walk us through the data pipeline behind DVIO. How are assets selected, flows normalized and weights calculated before the weekly rebalance?

DeFi Technologies's wholly owned ETP issuing subsidiary Valour, by virtue of its world leading portfolio of over 100 digital asset underlying ETPs listed on regulated securities exchanges, can provide unique data-driven market signals and analytics.

The reason it can is because Valour operates as a uniform, transparent, homogenous, comprehensive efficient market environment for key digital assets.

The creation of the DEFT Valour Investment Opportunity Index is a logical extension of DeFi Technologies’ significant data operations and position as a leader at the intersection of digital assets and capital markets.

Engineered by DeFi Technologies, The DEFT Valour Investment Opportunity Index tracks the top 50 individual crypto assets by AUM within Valour's ETP product offering. Each constituent represents real, regulated investor capital, with index weights adjusted weekly to reflect changes in capital allocation and net flows.

The core principles of the index are three:

AUM-driven: grounded in actual capital allocation

Flow-aware: responsive to changes in investor behavior

Rules-based: fully transparent and repeatable

How do you test whether the flow signal reflects durable investor conviction rather than short-lived momentum, market-making activity or product-specific noise?

The flow signal is sensitive to changes in investor behavior. The durability of investor conviction is more a function of the underlying instruments, the nature of the Valour investment community, and the markets wherein the two a forementioned elements exist.

The Empirical evidence suggests that Valour investors are not day traders or momentum investors; with a significant number of investors seeking exposure via their retirement accounts. This by definition tends to have a longer tenure and more capital appreciation-based focus.

Because the index draws on Valour’s own ETP ecosystem, what biases or blind spots could enter the dataset, and how do you communicate those limits to users?

The DVIO Index draws upon the universe of single digital asset underlying ETPs - to date this represents 75 instruments.

So one of the consequences is that if a Valour ETP does not exist that wraps a particular token, it cannot be included in the DVIO index.

What has the index revealed about capital rotation between Bitcoin, Ethereum and altcoins that would have been difficult to see from price performance alone?

The DVIO Index has highlighted the growing importance from an AUM, Price, and Capital Flow perspective of altcoins that power revenue generating projects. An example would be Hyperliquid as well as projects that facilitate or derive value from the growing AI sector.

Could flow-based benchmarks become part of the decision stack used by banks, asset managers or fintech platforms? What technical and compliance integrations would that require?

The DVIO Index is a unique product that drives signal and informational value in a way that gives light to a range of investment decisions and analyses.

As such, the DVIO Index itself should be part of the decision stack used by banks, asset managers, and fintech platforms. This can be easily accomplished via API or dataset integration with DeFi Technologies.

How might AI improve the interpretation of digital-asset flows without turning a transparent rules-based signal into an opaque model?

So far, AI can provide rapid correlations of the DVIO against novel datasets. It can also be used to provide a quick scan as to what may have spurred the movement of a particular asset within the Index.

What role do regulated ETPs play in giving traditional investors access to decentralized networks, and what is lost when exposure is packaged through a conventional financial product?

By definition, nothing is lost when exposure is packaged through a conventional regulated financial product. On the contrary, the regulated ETP wrapper provides opportunity for larger capital flows into digital assets. This is even more impactful because the traditional capital markets are significantly larger than the decentralized digital asset markets. The existence of ETPs is complimentary and beneficial to digital asset capital inflows.

Utilizing regulated wrappers which trade and settle like traditional securities ensure easier and more compliant trust and estate planning as well as administration and management of digital assets within a proper diversified portfolio.

What would falsify your thesis that the line between traditional and digital assets will disappear—and what milestones would show that convergence is genuinely underway?

This thesis is already being proven true today. The existence of stablecoins is among the strongest indicators of this convergence. The second indicator is the issuance of traditional equities and debt instruments on decentralized ledgers.
