Mastercard Brings Samsung Pay to Morocco in Tokenisation Push
Morocco – Mastercard is supporting the launch of Samsung Pay in Morocco, expanding mobile payment options for consumers through its tokenization technology. The launch enables eligible Mastercard cardholders at participating banks to make secure digital payments using compatible Samsung smartphones and smartwatches without requiring a physical card.
The initiative marks another step in Mastercard's efforts to strengthen Morocco's digital payments ecosystem through collaboration with financial institutions and technology partners. By integrating its payment capabilities with Samsung Pay, Mastercard aims to broaden access to convenient digital payment solutions and encourage their adoption in everyday transactions.
Mastercard's Tokenization Technology Powers Secure Payments
Samsung Pay is enabled by Mastercard's Digital Enablement Service (MDES), which uses tokenization technology to replace sensitive card details with unique digital tokens. This helps protect payment credentials during transactions, while authentication and risk-based security measures provide additional layers of protection.
The launch also aligns with Mastercard's global ambition to tokenize 100% of online transactions by 2030, as the company continues working with financial institutions and technology partners to advance secure digital payment experiences.
Mohamed Benomar, Country Manager of North West Africa at Mastercard, said: "At Mastercard, we believe the future of payments should give people more choice, greater convenience and confidence in every transaction. Supporting Samsung Pay in Morocco is another important step in expanding access to secure digital payment experiences, underpinned by our tokenization technology: Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES). Beyond introducing another way to pay, our ambition is to make digital payments faster, simpler, and more secure."
Samsung Pay Expands Mobile Payment Options for Consumers
Through Samsung Pay, eligible consumers can make supported payments using compatible Samsung smartphones and smartwatches, eliminating the need to present a physical payment card.
Participating banks can extend the service to eligible Mastercard cardholders, while merchants that accept supported contactless payments can accommodate transactions made through compatible Samsung devices.
The integration brings together consumers, financial institutions and merchants, expanding payment choice and supporting the continued shift towards digital commerce.
Hongseok Lee, President of Samsung Electronics Maghreb Arab, said: "With Samsung Pay, we want making a payment to feel as natural as using your smartphone or smartwatch. This launch marks another step in our commitment to providing Galaxy users with innovations that are simple, secure, and genuinely useful in everyday life. We would like to thank participating banks and Mastercard for their trust and collaboration, and we are proud to contribute to this digital transformation."
Mastercard and Samsung Launch Joint Campaign in Morocco
Alongside the launch, Mastercard and Samsung will introduce a joint campaign in Morocco to encourage the everyday adoption of Samsung Pay.
The campaign will combine promotional activities with consumer education, highlighting how users can make convenient and secure payments through compatible Samsung devices.
The initiative is expected to support wider awareness and adoption of mobile payments, contributing to the continued development of Morocco's digital payments and commerce ecosystem.
