Dubai’s daily lunch habits are undergoing a major shift, driven by food technology startup funch, which is introducing an AI-powered, subscription-based model designed to make workplace meals effortless, affordable, and automated.
With more than 60% of UAE residents ordering food through apps at least once a week, rising delivery fees, endless menu options, and daily decision fatigue have become a growing workplace frustration. funch aims to solve this with a flat $5.17 (AED 19) per-day lunch service, offering a true “set it and forget it” experience that cuts average lunch spending by up to 50%.
A Flexible Alternative to Traditional Meal Plans
Instead of the rigid weekly subscription models that often lead to waste and unused meals, funch operates on a flexible credit system. Subscribers can top up credits as needed or enable auto-renew for uninterrupted service. After users set their meal preferences and delivery windows, lunch arrives automatically—without browsing menus, paying delivery fees, or placing daily orders.
Founded by Industry Experts
funch was co-founded by Ahmad Joehnny, who previously held leadership roles at Delivery Hero and Zalando, and Ghada El Zanaty, whose experience spans WE Egypt, Omantel, and Apple App. Both founders envisioned a frictionless lunch experience built around user convenience rather than impulse ordering.
During its trial phase—before any official announcement—the company delivered over 75,000 meals from its 2,000-square-foot central kitchen in Dubai, achieving a 99.8% delivery accuracy rate and strong user retention.
Built as an AI-Native Company
Behind its simple user experience, funch operates as a fully AI-driven platform. The system forecasts demand, optimizes delivery routes, manages menu rotations, and minimizes food waste—allowing the company to maintain affordability and operational efficiency.
“Current food delivery apps are designed for spontaneous, one-off orders,” said Ahmad Joehnny, Co-Founder and CEO. “They rely on endless choices, layered discounts, minimum orders, and daily fees. We built funch for the millions who want lunch at work without the complications.”
Co-Founder and COO Ghada El Zanaty added: “Our customers aren’t just buying lunch—they’re buying peace of mind. The pre-order model enables better planning, reduces waste, and helps us operate with fewer vehicles and fewer trips, aligning directly with the sustainability goals of Dubai Vision 2040.”
Backed by Prominent Regional Investors
funch has secured $500,000 in pre-seed funding, led by Angelspark with participation from several strategic investors. Among them is Mostafa Kandil, Founder of SWVL and the first Arab entrepreneur to list a company on Nasdaq with a valuation exceeding $1.5 billion. This marks Kandil’s first angel investment.
“funch is building what every major city needs—a flexible lunch infrastructure for workplaces,” Kandil said. “This is not just another food delivery app; it’s a high-frequency daily habit with massive scale potential.”
Additional investors include renowned Indian marketer and Pinstorm founder Mahesh Murthy, along with Tushar Fotedar, Hamed Mustafa, Rutvik Deepak, and others.
Ambition: One Million Meals by Q2 2026
The company aims to deliver one million lunches by the second quarter of 2026, establishing the Middle East’s first dedicated lunch infrastructure.
funch’s mission is clear: to make lunch effortless, affordable, and automated for the region’s workforce.
Users can begin their seamless lunch experience—available Monday through Saturday—for $5.17/day by visiting funch’s website and downloading the app.
