The UAE is on the verge of transforming its payment landscape with the introduction of Palm ID, a cutting-edge biometric payment solution that scans the unique vein patterns in an individual’s palm. Developed by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) in collaboration with the Central Bank of the UAE, this futuristic technology aims to provide faster, more secure, and seamless transactions across both public and private sectors.
Unveiled at Gitex Global 2024, Palm ID is currently in its final stages of development and forms part of the broader UAE Vision 2031 initiative. Designed to make traditional payment methods like credit cards and mobile apps obsolete, the system will allow users to make payments or even withdraw cash from ATMs by simply scanning their palm.
“Each person’s palm veins are unique, making this method highly secure and nearly impossible to duplicate,” said an ICP spokesperson during Gitex 2024. “We are in the process of finalizing regulations and policies to ensure a smooth public rollout.”
A Highly Secure and Non-Intrusive Payment Solution
Unlike facial recognition, palm vein scanning is considered less intrusive, as it cannot be easily replicated or shared, ensuring greater privacy and security. During registration, users will be required to link their palm biometrics to their personal profiles using an Emirates ID, further enhancing the system’s accuracy and security. The registration process will be available through the ICP platform.
“This technology offers an extra layer of security, as it removes the possibility of sharing sensitive details like credit card information,” the spokesperson added. “We expect this to set a new benchmark in digital payments, helping the UAE transition into a cashless society.”
Potential Beyond Payments
The Palm ID system could have applications far beyond payments. It has the potential to streamline access to crowded public spaces, such as metro stations, where passengers could use their palm to enter, eliminating the need for cards or tickets.
“This innovation will make accessing services in busy areas much more convenient and efficient,” the spokesperson noted. “Instead of using a metro card, commuters will simply scan their palm.”
A Pioneering Step for the Middle East
Once all regulatory requirements are met, the UAE will be the first country in the Middle East to implement palm vein technology on a national scale. The rollout is expected to commence once policies are finalized, positioning the UAE at the forefront of secure and convenient digital transactions.
As the country continues to invest heavily in groundbreaking technologies aimed at enhancing the quality of life for its residents, Palm ID is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of digital payments in the UAE and beyond.
