JPMorgan Chase Plans to Open a Branch in Iraq

JPMorgan Chase plans to establish a branch in Iraq to finance projects undertaken by American companies, marking a significant step in expanding the global banking giant’s presence in the country and supporting Iraq’s efforts to attract foreign investment.

The agreement was reached during a meeting in Washington between Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi and representatives of JPMorgan Chase as part of the prime minister’s official visit to the United States.JPMorgan Chase Plans to Open a Branch in Iraq

The planned branch will help facilitate financing for US companies operating in Iraq, particularly those involved in key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, industry, and technology. The move is expected to strengthen financial ties between Iraq and the United States while making it easier for international businesses to invest in the country.

The announcement reflects growing confidence among major global financial institutions in Iraq’s economic prospects as the government continues to implement banking reforms and improve the investment climate.

The development follows JPMorgan Chase’s recent appointment to arrange financing for a $1.6 billion urea fertilizer plant in Basra, one of Iraq’s largest private industrial projects.

The project is being developed by KAR Electrical Power Plant Production Trading FZE (KEPPT), with JPMorgan working alongside export credit agencies to secure development financing.

Once operational, the facility is expected to produce 1.15 million tonnes of urea annually, helping reduce Iraq’s reliance on fertilizer imports while supporting domestic agriculture and enhancing food security.

Construction of the fertilizer plant is expected to begin in 2027, with commercial production targeted for 2030. US engineering company KBR has already completed the project’s front-end engineering and design (FEED) study.

The planned establishment of a JPMorgan Chase branch represents another milestone in Iraq’s strategy to attract international investment and deepen cooperation with leading global financial institutions.
